Sunflower Butter - Fri, 26 Sep 2008
My lovely sunflower has hung in there as the weather has started changing, and I've gotten a second smaller head off the stalk. It's nearly ripe (those seeds are really starting to wiggle) so now my challenge is going to be how to dehull a bunch of seeds so that I can grind my own sunflower butter. Some folks crush them in a bag with a rolling pin and pick 'em out, some run them through manual grain mills. I'll probably wind up trying a few things before I'm done.Delicious Sunflower Seeds - Wed, 17 Sep 2008
Well, the first head of seeds was successfully (and deliciously) salted and roasted! I found that cutting the amount of salt in half from what most recipes suggested tasted just fine to me, and it's a lot healthier that way too. If I can get any more heads to mature, I'm going to try shelling them and making sunflower seed spread/butter.To Shell Or Not To Shell? - Sat, 30 Aug 2008
My sunflower head dried out enough that the seeds came out which means I'm finally to the best part of growing sunflowers: the eating! Of course, now I have to decide if I want to roast them in-shell, or find a way to dehull them and do something else. How do you dehull a lot of sunflower seeds? I'm glad you as I found some good links about that too... Come check it out!Wow, that was quick! - Mon, 18 Aug 2008
I decided today that my sunflower head looked ripe enough to cut down to finish drying inside. Ha-ha, squirrels! So far it's gardener 1, squirrels 0. The sunflower has three or four more heads growing on it, so now I'll get to see if I can get any more of the heads large enough to mature.Wow, that was quick! - Mon, 18 Aug 2008

I figured it would take more than a first try to get good sunflower seeds, but my garden would seem to be proving me wrong, which is a great thing! I've just taken a crash course in thwarting birds and squirrels, and the delicious harvest seems to be mine. Come see my homegrown sunflower seeds!Ready To Harvest Sunflower Seeds? - Thu, 14 Aug 2008
