Alligators have a large, slightly rounded bodies, with thick limbs, broad heads, and very powerful tails.

Males can weigh 500 lbs to over 1000 pounds. Adult Alligators are about 13 to 14.5 feet long with half of that length being the tail.

The tail is mostly used to propel the alligator through the water.

Alligators travel very quickly in water but slow-moving on land.

They can, however, lunge short distances very quickly.

Alligators have five toes in front and four in back.

The National Park Service has accepted The Everglades Poem for publication in it's 2009 Newsletter. It was written by my 11 year old daughter. It will soon appear on their website but for now you can read it on my Alligator site.

Pythons were released into the Everglades by pet owners and they are now reproducing there. Alligators are trying to help the situation by eating them but sometimes pythons are even too much for an alligator.

Alligators can stealthily maneuver through the water leaving nary a ripple, despite having neither fins nor flippers like other adept swimmers. Instead, they use special muscles to shift the position of their lungs, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.
